This image and the text that accompanies it were inspired by the Great Land Sale in Mission, BC as described by Andreas Schroeder in Carved from Wood: Mission, British Columbia 1861-1992.
Orchestrated by an ambitious Vancouver land developer, the “Great Auction Sale of 300 City Lots” was advertised in newspapers throughout the colony and into the United States. A special train was scheduled to take buyers to the auction. They were met by a brass band and a huge banner that read: “Get in on the Ground Floor!” Food was provided and a liquor tent was discreetly pitched out back. The auctioneer sold lots fast and furious all day long before people boarded the train and went back home.
Strategy tips
As the Land Speculator, you must do the hard sell. Tell them, “Gentlemen, you can’t depend on your eyes if your imagination is out of focus! Whoever said that money can’t buy happiness, just didn’t know what to buy!” HOT TIP: To keep the pesky protestors away, you need lots of handcuffs.
