The Outhouse
This replica outhouse is papered with selections from The British Colonist, one of British Columbia’s first newspapers that was founded during the gold rush in 1858. Viewers to the gallery were invited to have a seat and read from the reproduced back copies of the newspaper from the 1860s. The artists circled passages that highlight the prevalent racist attitudes of the day. Carved into the door of the outhouse are the actual names of prominent architects of British Columbia’s dispossession of Indigenous lands, with Land Commissioner Joseph Trutch foremost among them.
